How odd that this episode was held back until the very end of the
season. On a sitcom, episodes are often swapped in production
order to take advantage of sweeps and the like, but it's rare for
an episode of a fully-established series to be moved from fourth
to twentieth.

Beyond this, "Police Story" is a very enjoyable little tale which
tackles something I didn't expect to see: Frasier and Martin
pursuing the same lady. What makes it work is how sincere
Maureen (Jane Kaczmarek) is: sure, Frasier is handsome and
lovely, but it's clear from early on that Martin is much more her
type. This is a very fun little episode with highlights including: the
opening scene between Frasier and Roz; Frasier making a fool of
himself when he fails to realise where Maureen's interests lie; and
the howlingly funny scene at the end where his lack of sex life is
announced to the entire KACL staff.

It's just a shame that we wouldn't see Maureen again until the
break-up, since it would've been nice to get some more
interaction on that front. But, as she was clearly only intended to
be a one-time thing, that's understandable.

Super episode with maximum frasier embarrassment, May 12, 2008

Reviewer: Shumit from London

The more Frasier gets his come-uppance the better the episode is the usual pattern and this time Frasier suffers ultimate humiliation when a police woman he is interested in falls for his Dad. Superb acting by Frasier when he confronts his Dad about the woman in a bar. Plus the little vignette at the end where Roz throws a surprise party compounds Frasier's bad day!

'Police Story' review, Jun 08, 2005

This episode was only the fourth to be recorded for Season 3 but ended up airing several months later as the twentieth and features the first of two appearances from Jane Kaczmarek (later of 'Malcolm In The Middle') as Martin's girlfriend Maureen. While not quite brilliant as a whole, this episode does contain some excellent scenes. I love Niles' delight at Martin asking him for advice, especially his eagerness to tell Frasier about the situation while Frasier discovering his dad sharing a table with Maureen is great as at first he believes that Martin is talking him up only to be told the full truth of the matter ('Going down!'). The closing scene at KACL with Frasier's surprise party is also fun as he blurts out a series of embarrassing admissions in full earshot of his colleagues.
