Could've been better, Nov 29, 2011

Reviewer: Sammy J from Melbourne, Australia

"Retirement is Murder" is certainly not a bad episode, by any
standards. It's a classic class conflict show, with Frasier up against
Martin and his cop buddies. It's great to see the show's continuity by
bringing back the Weeping Lotus murder (we'll see similar things so
many times, where the series has a much longer memory than your
standard sitcom), and the comedy of errors is quite amusing. Beyond
this, there are some great interactions between Niles and Bulldog,
which is an unusual pairing, to say the least.

At the same time, I wasn't entirely sold on this episode. As funny as
it is that Frasier becomes convinced of a monkey's guilt, it's also
faintly ridiculous. And - unlike most of season 2's output - some
moments feel like they were a standard sitcom script grafted on to
these characters at the last minute. I certainly enjoyed the episode,
but it's by no means a classic. Just some solid padding.

Niles is Genius, Mar 13, 2009

At the basketball game a guy throws peanuts to Frasier and they land on Nile's lap. Niles throws them back, offended that someone is throwing things at him.

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time.

One of the best Frasier episodes, Sep 11, 2006

Reviewer: Seán from Meath, Ireland

I thought this was one of the funniest and best written episodes of Frasier, ever. Funny dialogue, good story, brilliant comic timing and some great one-liners. The scenes at the end where Frasier explains to Martin's police friends how he 'solved' the 20 year-old murder mystery had me doubled-up with laughter. And with Frasier's subsequent attempts to laugh the whole thing off, it just got funnier and funnier. A classic.

'Retirement Is Murder' review, May 28, 2005

Reviewer: Jocelyn from London, UK

An episode in which Martin becomes obsessed with solving the 'Weeping Lotus' murder, a case he has spent years trying to crack. It's a good idea but with the absence of a subplot perhaps not enough to sustain a whole episode and so it does tend to drag in places. There are some excellent scenes however such as Niles throwing back the peanuts at the Sonics game while the ending is a good one as Frasier humiliates himself by incorrectly stating that the murder was committed by a monkey. His further embarrassing attempt to make a joke out of the situation is particularly funny.
