Don't forget the ice!, May 10, 2013

I have a theory that all great sitcoms build a firm sense of place. When I think of my favourite sitcoms - "Seinfeld", "NewsRadio", "Mary Tyler Moore", "The Golden Girls" - they all revolve around a warm and well-documented location. Frasier's apartment and the Elliott Bay Towers (not to mention KACL) are such examples.

So, it's no surprise that I enjoy an episode which plays with this space so well. This one is just great fun, as Frasier gets dragged between two parties in his building while trying to make it with a date who's already doubtful of his loyalty. Between Martin's party-planning skills, the KACL interlopers, and Niles' latest uncomfortable dating experience, Frasier's night is - of course - ruined. And it's done so in style. Elevators, slideshows, and ice all conspire against our hero, making "Party, Party" a fun little spin on the usual one-set "Frasier" farces.

A fun episode, Sep 18, 2012

This episode sees Frasier with a new romantic interest, Trish, but he can’t seem to keep dates with her as he is constantly running late and missing her.

Each time he begs her for another chance, which she reluctantly gives him.

Niles has started an affair with a married woman, Alison, though doesn’t know she is married at first. This woman lives in Frasier’s building and is hosting a party that both Frasier and Niles go to.

Whilst at the party Frasier receives a call from Trish saying she is going away that night. Desperate to get some time with her before she leaves he makes his accuses and leaves.
Going back to his apartment he finds friends and family gathered to give him a surprise party for his birthday! Making every effort to get out of the party he finally gets out, but whilst taking the elevator, runs into the hostess of the previous party and is forced to rejoin them. Trying to get out of the apartment without being seen he waits until it all goes dark and they start watching a slide show. I liked it when the door bangs shut behind him and Niles, trying to shift the blame for the affair, turns to the party host and says ‘well, someone was quick to get out of here weren’t they!’ It was good when the husband who knows his wife is having an affair orders the man who she is seeing to stand up, only for a few men to stand up!

Frasier then bumps into his colleagues on the elevator and has to go back into his party. The game of charades was fun to watch and it was a good moment when they bring the cake out and start singing only for Frasier to start crying!

I enjoyed the farcical way in which Frasier flits between the parties and his agonising quest to get out of each of them.

Frasier finally manages to meet up with Trish who is waiting for a cab to the airport. Frasier apologies profusely and as a romantic gesture offers to drive her to her destination instead of her taking the plane. Overwhelmed by this she accepts and they start off the journey, but Frasier soon learns they are not perhaps as compatible as he thought and that he has a long, long journey ahead of him!

'Party, Party' review, Jul 01, 2005

In contrast to the previous episode, both Crane brothers have dates here with Frasier going out with Tricia, with whom he struggles to keep appointments, and Niles seeing Allison, who happens to live Frasier's building. Much of the episode sees poor Frasier struggling to meet up with Tricia whilst simultaneously dashing between a suprise birthday party at his apartment and another party thrown by the safari club at Allison's apartment, at which Niles is also a guest. The latter holds perhaps the funniest scenes here as Niles panicks when he learns that Allison is married and that her bad-tempered husband Karl is in the room. At one point Niles is about to rise to his feet when Karl asks who has been having an affair with his wife, only for several other men to stand up instead! The events at Frasier's place are good fun including a hopeless game of charades and a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' that's so out of tune it reduces the birthday boy to tears. The conclusion where Frasier learns of Trisha's spiritual beliefs doesn't make for the funniest of endings, but otherwise this is a highly enjoyable episode.
