Episode Synopsis |
A neighbour complains that Eddie got her dog pregnant, and she has the proof: a box full of puppies that look just like Eddie. Frasier is shocked - he was certain that Eddie had been fixed. Now he insists that his father gets the job done, but Martin keeps making the appointment and then cancelling it. When Frasier takes matters into his own hands and takes Eddie down to the vet himself, Martin shows up. As Frasier mentions 'bath', someone opens the door and Eddie runs out. Martin is beside himself and can't think about anything else, so he, Frasier and Niles decide to go back to the park at night to look for him. Niles manages to be frightened by a raccoon and a bush before going home, leaving Frasier and Martin alone. Martin reveals he is really upset because everything seems to be changing - first he made the rules, now he has to live by (Frasier's house) rules, so Frasier agrees not to be as strict. In the end, Eddie returns.

Episode Highlights |
- Referring to Frasier's snobbishness:
Martin: We used to think there'd been a mix-up at the hospital.
Of course when Niles came along, it shot that theory to hell.
- After the neighbour hands Frasier a box of little pups:
Frasier: Oh my God! Miniature Eddie's!
Martin: I let him loose in the park so he can get some exercise.
Frasier: Apparently, that's not all he got (!)
- Roz shows affection for one of the pups and then tosses him
aside:
Frasier: How could you do that?
Roz: I can do it with men too!
- Niles putting pate behind his ears so one of the pups will show affection because Daphne picks men like that.
- Niles and Frasier speaking instructions in French so Eddie won't understand.
- Niles' outdoor encounter with a bush and a raccoon.
Then after Niles gets back to the car and is about to leave:
Frasier: Be sure to call us from the kerb so we know you're safe
(!).
Frasier Online Episode Review |
A rather fun episode with much hilarity stemming from Frasier's dislike of his apartment being overrun with even more Eddie's. The scene waiting in the park is also rather good, with a nice bit of bonding between Frasier and Martin. The end result is a rather well acted and written, above average episode

Great character work, Nov 24, 2011 |

"The Unkindest Cut" continues season 1's great streak of episodes centering on the Frasier/Martin bond, and the conflicts it creates. John Mahoney is always on form, and Kelsey Grammer is at his best in those soft moments with 'dad'. There's some grand Niles humour too, and who doesn't love the boys speaking in French to try and grab Eddie? |
