Episode Synopsis

Derek Mann, a writer for a local Seattle newspaper, writes in his column one line - I hate Frasier Crane. Of course, this drives Frasier to distraction and points out on his radio show that a better writer would provide a detailed analysis of the show. This Mr Mann is quite happy to oblige and fills the whole of his next column with them. Frasier then starts to attack Derek personally on-air and he calls in and suggests they settle this dispute like men - in a fight. Frasier agrees but only in the heat of passion as he tells his father that he isn't going to go through with it. Martin gets angry about this, saying it is like when Frasier said he was going to fight the school bully Billy Kriezel and then backed out. So the day of the big match arrives - what has Frasier decided to do....?

Episode Highlights

- Frasier wants to know why Maris isn't accompanying Niles:
Niles: Just as we were leaving, Maris had a run in with a rude directory assistance operator and it shattered her calm.
Frasier: Niles, have you considered that Maris may be a bit highly strung and should see someone.
Niles: She's seen everyone - why do you think she was calling directory assistance?!

- Frasier dealing with a caller with Call Waiting on-air.

- After Niles tries to remember where he met Roz:
Niles: Oh well, I'm far too successful to feel awkward - where did we meet?

- Referring to Derek Mann's column:
Niles: He even attacks your dim witted call screener.
Roz: That's me!
Niles: Oh now I remember you!

- Frasier puts his feud with Derek Mann before his callers:
Roz: On line 2 we have Stuart who's having a problem with delayed gratification.
Frasier: Well he'll just have to wait!.

- As Niles is filing his nails:
Niles: What is it that makes us Crane boys such targets?
Frasier: Chalk it up to random violence(!)

Frasier Online Episode Review

After the first 3 episodes, which really set up all the characters, storylines and tensions, things settle down in this episode. Niles' first scenes with Roz are highly amusing as is the running joke of Niles delivering the paper to Frasier throughout the episode. as is Frasier's on-air attack of Derek Mann. This is the first episode written by 'Frasier' stalwart Christopher Lloyd and a very enjoyable one it is too.

Very enjoyable, Jul 08, 2009

Reviewer: Sammy J from Canberra, Australia

"I Hate Frasier Crane" is a thoroughly enjoyable episode which will
really depend on how much you believe Frasier would be willing to
get in a fistfight. This episode continues to wonderfully gel the
characters, particularly beginning the Niles/Roz bon mot rivalry that
would continue in style for some time. It also continues to display
the versatility of the various sets, with Frasier's home life, work life,
and leisure life neatly coming together.

In short, I accept Frasier's actions in this episode as indicative of his
obsessiveness; and so I think this episode is another solid notch in
season one's belt.
