I think they just made it up for the plot point.
A little suspension of disbelief might be in order ;)

Actually, I became a bit of a tape-splicing 'expert' back in the 80s, with plenty of audio and video tapes salvaged in my time. I even managed to miraculously save a Commodore 64 game I had copied to audio tape despite having something like 5 seconds of code chewed up! How that game ever loaded again is beyond me.

In my attic I still have my official 'Liverpool - The Mighty Reds' VHS tape spliced with a load of footage from Mexico '86 on the end. God knows why I did that. I reckon if I tried playing it now the tape would simply disintegrate

:D I think even i had that video. Not sure i still do, though.

I wasn't too bad at saving tapes generally, but I did have to fish out a couple of tapes over the years that were so chewed up and twisted that there was litle hope of useful revival.

I fixed a few but for the most part I didn't have the patience and it always seemed that if the tape got stuck once, it was sure to happen again. Especially after being spliced and taped together.

I definitely don't think it was odd that Daphne didn't fix the tape. Easier to just stick another tape in the spot and hope he won't notice.

Absolutely agree with you.

hehe, I love how we can keep going on the minutiae of this unimportant detail, too. Very Frasier. You should be proud, Kittysafe, even if you won't admit that we're right

Oh no I agree, that's an odd thing to have an issue over. There were plenty more outlandish leaps of faith made in the series I think; that was entirely plausible.

My biggest 'that doesn't make any sense' moment was in the S3 finale You Can Go Home Again where Frasier magically has his season 3 hair rather than the long ungainly locks he boasted circa Cheers S11/Frasier S1 when that episode was supposed to have been set. It just annoys me that such a big detail wasn't paid any attention, unlike in S11's excellent Crock Tales.

I fixed many a cassette tape in the '80s too, which is why I found the plot scheme a bit implausible ;)

I hate the piece they have on him so much in Crock Tales that I prefer the lack of continuity in You Can Go Home Again.

I think I've already mentioned Frasier in the kitchen in I'm Listening but the other one that gets me annoyed is Niles getting his tie stuck in Daphne's dress in Odd Man Out. Though it lends itself to one of my favorite Frasier lines ("Niles, there's something on your tie") it bugs the hell out of me that he doesn't just take his damn tie off!

Why would he? It's his excuse to be close to Daphne. :)

I'm not sure I've contributed to this thread so far - but the way I see it is that Frasier is finished, we've talked about all the episodes, but we all love the show! So nitpicking over the little details is the way to go. :D

Yeah, we were both obviously pretty good at doing that KS - we're a couple of technologically minded geeks!

Nothing about Daphne's character tells me she'd have the slightest inclination/skillset to be able to take a knackered tape apart and fix it, therefore the plot scheme was entirely plausible. If my missus broke a tape she'd just chuck it in the bin.

Hehe, I'm going to keep this argument up for as long as it takes...

:D Those boxes do have a mind of their own sometimes - especially when 'series link' is involved. And i've had intricate Swarovski ornaments with more resistance to breaking at the slightest touch than those hunks of junk supplied by Sky.

I bet Daphne never even did the basics, like fast-forwarding a tape with a pencil.

ive had a little time to think about it, and i admit that over the course of watching some episodes the last few days, there are a lot of mistakes and can be really annoying, Frasier doesnt understand Roz's french boyfriend, or Guy, the ski instructor, then talks fluent french to avoid Eddie understanding he was going to the vet

:?: :? It's Roz who doesn't understand him. Frasier just helps him find a really good restaurant. Jean-Pierre wants to break up with Roz, but they carry on talking for Roz to think that Frasier is telling Jean-Pierre that she wants to break up with him.

Yep, what Ben said. Also as far as Guy is concerned, he doesn't understand Guy's accent. Guy isn't speaking French, he's speaking English with a French accent.

There is a speaking German issue though! In An Affair to Forget, Frasier doesn't speak German leaving Marta to interpret Gunnar's German into Spanish and Frasier than interpreting the Spanish into English. However, in Semi-Decent Proposal, Frasier speaks German with Claire.

The other way round, that would've been a continuity error. But he might've learnt it off-screen in the 6 year period between those episodes. It's possible!
