Post count changes

Postby Stu » Sun Sep 14, 2008 11:55 pm

Following on from recent discussion about quality of posts, and some further discussion with the mods, the post count that appears under a persons avatar on a thread has been removed though it is still available in your profile page.

This is likely to be followed up with further changes in the near future such as designating whole forums not counting towards your post count, to try and negate any importance that is being attached to post counts, and to reinforce that ultimately this is a Frasier forum first and foremost.

Were people really THAT worked up about post counts?

Makes no difference to me either way but I really find the whole thing kind of silly.

You see they do this on another forum, have an 'off-topic' section not to do with Bond where your posts don't count (they do count as your 'hidden' count) but the rest count.

Personally, it's a bit silly as Cat says to do it. I don't try to bump my count towards the astronomical total it is now for the hell of it. It might as well al be restarted as 0.

Yeah, it's seriously never been a big deal with me either.

I mean, I'm a moderator for the largest Tori Amos community on the Internet, so I understand your thought process on this whole thing, but I didn't think anyone was really getting that worked up over it.

Still, whatever you want to do is cool with me, since this is indeed a Frasier forum first and foremost and this doesn't do anything to change that.

I really am not worried either way, I don't think it'll make a difference to the amount I post - in fact in truth I was a bit embarrassed by how high it was, so I'm kind of glad.

I belong to several forums. Of the two that I use mostly (H2G2 and Groundspeak), one doesn't show post counts at all and one has an off-topic section which doesn't count towards it.

If they're still available for reference purposes (i.e. on profile pages) I guess I'm not too bothered.

Did the frequent congratulations of people reaching a milestone contribute to this? If so, this seems kind of an overreaction to me. But I can get behind the general declining quality of posts thing, so fair play if this is an attempt to prevent that.

It's fine as it is (was) - I'd save yourself some work. Is anyone really bothered how many posts they have? I'm not sure we need to divide the forum up into areas of board-worthiness. I think it's the most straight-forward forum i've seen.

I don't want to muddle things...but could a poll have been organised or the regulars PM'd to see what they think?

I'm not asking for the count to be returned but I was just wondering. Anyway, back to work. :)

Erm, yeah Stu, who dreamt up this daft idea?

I think the changes made will benefit the forum in the long term. It's important to stress that this isn't a reaction to a specific incident or user, it's something which has been under discussion for a while.

In answer to Wezzo's comment, no, it didn't have anything to do with those congratulatory messages when a user reached a particular milestone, although there have been a couple of incidents in the past where people's feeling have apparently been hurt because no one has noticed they passed a particular landmark, so a hidden count should avoid that situation again.

The main reason for this move is so that the whole board isn't turned orange by a particular poster who is simply posting nonsense to up their count. Like I said, there aren't any regulars who do that as far as I'm aware (so no need to Paddy  ), but hiding the post count will hopefully stop this forum becoming like so many others.

It's still possible to see your count in your profile, and also on the memberlist on the bar above so if you ever get curious to see how much you're posting the information's there for all to see. :)

LMAO at one particular part of your post there BS!

And yeah - feelings hurt when no one notices - none of you noticed when I reached 14,000, you selfish bastards! ;)

Posting nonsense up their count...in my defence the BSG thread...

Sorry, bad joke. :)

Well that post explained things a bit. It's a bit naked without the count but like most things it'll be adapted to.

I hadn't even noticed it had gone until now!!!

Happy with that Stu. We will still get people posting drivel just to rise up the Post count memberlist, but c'est la vie. As long as I stay sandwiched between BGF & Meg on the date joined list then I'm happy with that. Fortunately for me that will never change!!
