I think the changes made will benefit the forum in the long term. It's important to stress that this isn't a reaction to a specific incident or user, it's something which has been under discussion for a while.
In answer to Wezzo's comment, no, it didn't have anything to do with those congratulatory messages when a user reached a particular milestone, although there have been a couple of incidents in the past where people's feeling have apparently been hurt because no one has noticed they passed a particular landmark, so a hidden count should avoid that situation again.
The main reason for this move is so that the whole board isn't turned orange by a particular poster who is simply posting nonsense to up their count. Like I said, there aren't any regulars who do that as far as I'm aware (so no need to Paddy

), but hiding the post count will hopefully stop this forum becoming like so many others.
It's still possible to see your count in your profile, and also on the memberlist on the bar above so if you ever get curious to see how much you're posting the information's there for all to see.
