When Daphne Changed

Anyone know the exact episode where Daphne's character changed and became so unpleasant?

It was in season 8 when they transitioned Daphne and Niles to a married couple. I don't think there's a specific date, cos I never disliked her. I just felt the marriage fundamentally changed her character, and not to the strength of the show. But many do hate her, which is too bad. So I don't think there's a specific date you could pinpoint.

Yeah I was trying to pinpoint when the turning point really was. For me I think it was before they got married, probably when they started dating. I have to admit I'm one of those that do not like the character of Daphne after the shift in attitude.

I do think Daphne got a little less kooky around season 5, but more notably in S6. That was probably the beginning of the end, but she was still at least likeable at that point.

I mostly agree with Paul's timeframe. After a point, they seemed to drop the whole 'Daphne is psychic' angle altogether (there was an episode dealing with it in Season 8, I believe, then I think, never again.) I always found that part of her personality endearing.

Hi everyone,

I think Daphne changed in the episode "Taking Liberties" Mel unexpectedly shows up at Frasiers dinner party and makes demands on Niles when he and Daphne had plans for the evening. I always felt like her attitude became "if Mel can treat him that bad, I can treat him worse, after all he loves me!"

this is the most debated thing about the show
shows how much it impacted the show
you only have to watch her interview on the season 11 extras to realize why daphne changed. listen to jane leeves speak. you would think it was the queen its that posh. fact is she married a mega rich guy became a princess of 20000 dollar hair cuts and that obviously seeped into her character. happens to almost every female actor out there. ego is a terrible thing at times.
just look how elaine changed, carrie, grace etc
they are intially there for support and then start acting like they are the show.
ok maybe not grace as it was called will and grace but her character is not likeable at all in the final few seasons

I'll have to look up that interview. It is unfortunate how some of these people are not able to keep their feet on the ground and stay true to what made them who they are:(

I think Alison, Daphne's attitude was more, "Niles needs to stand up for himself and for us", and Daphne was going to show Niles that she expected nothing less. Remember Niles at one point said to Daphne in Frasier's apartment that she needed to "see things from Mel's point of view." I totally understand why she did that.

Right, I can understand that to a point but why be so b**chy to everyone else? I think she could have changed but still could have been likeable. Instead of being the happy, kind person she seemed to be before, she turned into a sarcastic nag (not all the time but most). I think it has part to do with bad writing and part to do with the actress.

And while I'm kind of complaining ;) There is one episode that bothers me so much with Daphne and Niles. The one where Roz mistakenly thinks they want to have a Menage a trois and they act like prepubescent idiots for the rest of the episode. I always thought that was so beneath them, not at all funny and damaging to the characters. Ok I'm done :-)

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss was effectively a billionaire long before she appeared in Seinfeld, so i wouldn't have thought the subsequent high salary from that show would have changed her. And SJP was the star of her show, wasn't she? As if a similar amount of male stars aren't equally as egomaniacal anyway. :D

had feeling i woudl get that response. i was just using it as an example for jane cose she is female. it was not the same back then for them. but yes males are just as guilty.

and how was julia louie a billionare, wasnt she a struggling actress?

JLD is daughter of Gerard Louis-Dreyfus and their family founded and runs the Louis Dreyfus Group. They're not too badly off - i don't think she'll ever have gone short of a few quid.

To be fair, she doesn't appear to have been mollycoddled by the family wealth.
