Kenny: the best secondary character?

Postby Tom M » Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:01 am

It occured to me recently, that of all the secondary characters, Kenny is always one of the best. So much so, that in my eyes I would say he is one of my favourite characters in the show and almost definetly the best secondary character.

Thoughts?

I don't know if Bebe or Lilith would count as secondary characters, but my vote would go for them. Although I had no problems with Kenny.

I agree, Kenny is a great character, played brilliantly by Tom McGowan. I always enjoy the episodes where he has a bigger role (except Kissing Cousin) and I actually prefer him to Bulldog, but like 5HRINK I would definitely go with Lilith and Bebe as my favourite secondary characters.

I like Kenny, but my vote goes to Lilith as the best secondary character too. I don't much like the character of Bebe.

I'm with the crowd. I love Kenny. He has some of the best lines and he cracks me up but Lilith and Bebe take the cake!

I can't believe so many of you like Bebe... I, for one, cannot stand her! I know her character is supposed to be annoying, but that's only to other characters!

I've been thinking and the only other secondary character that comes close to Kenny is probably Maris; even though we never saw her, all the little hints about her were hilarious.

I honestly adore Bebe, if only because I think her chemistry with Frasier is badass.

And as most of you know, I've always been really big on Kenny's character. Tom Gowan (sp) is a vastly underrated character actor.

Definitely with the rest of you - Kenny is fantastic, my personal favourite non-regular. How about we post some favourite Kenny moments?

Mine is in "Hungry Heart" (a rare gem in a poor series), after Frasier kisses Roz then slams her back into the bathroom - you think Kenny's going to be shocked but instead he grins and says, "You dog"...brilliantly acted.

One of my favourite Kenny moments is in Frasier-Lite, when he eats the birdseed and Frasier thinks he's eaten the pigeon:

"Oh, all right, I couldn't take it anymore. I only had a mouthful!"

Kenny: Another great show Doc!
Frasier: Did you EVEN listen?

Mickeba's never been big on Kenny. He's better in small doses, but the episodes where they've given him a lot to do fall flat. I always liked Bulldog and Gil. Gil is a more extreme version of Frasier, and Bulldog is great at taking the doc down a notch.

Absolutely disagree with that statement. Hungry Heart and Kenny on the Couch were two of the funniest episodes of the latter seasons. Kissing Cousins was bad. I'll grant you that one.

Kenny's one of my three favourite characters (the other two don't include Frasier or Niles! ). Even though he only has about half a dozen lines in Tales From The Crypt he completely makes that episode for me. And for some reason, this from Analyzed Kiss never fails to tickle me no end:

"I know it looks like a monkey can do my job, but it can’t. True story."

I think it's because as soon as he says it, I always then wonder why "true story"??!!

That line cracks me up. The way he says "True story" is priceless.

I also love the exchange between Kenny and Roz in The Harrassed

Roz: Typical man. You always want to get in there and rescue us,
but the minute things get messy, you just can't handle it.
Kenny: Ha! Women want us to think that they're tough, and then all
of a sudden, they get needy.
Roz: Men are like, "Come on baby, you can lean on me, oops, gotta
go."
Kenny: Yeah, women are like "Get away, get away. Don't leave me!"
Roz: [becoming caught in the heat of the exchange] Here's men:
[she groans disgustingly]
Kenny: Here's women: Me, me, me, me, me...

I love that part. It's so funny. I really like Kenny. He's really funny, but I would have to go with Lilith for best secondary character

Kenny is a very good character but every last drop of comedy (and evil) was squeezed from Bebe - she's my favourite.

I love, love, love Kenny. Agreed about him being the best secondary character, although most of the secondary characters are great. The only one that bugs me is Noel. Not the fact that he's geeky or anything like that. I just think I find the actor's way of speaking annoying, and that it grates.

I do like Kenny - a good side character who could carry a larger slice of a story.

Bebe grew on me - and by the end she is sublime:

"Bebe, tell me there's a chance that you weren't to blame for this?"

"Oh darling, there's ALWAYS a Chance!"

My favourite side character is Gil.

Yeah, I really like Kenny too - the wounded look on his face when realising he hadn't been invited to Frasier's party "Don't mind telling you Doc - this hurts" was funny, sad and brilliantly done.

My favourite 2nd string character was definitely Bebe. Played even more over the top than Frasier and absolutely inspired acting - her lighting a cigarette speech was utterly brilliant.

Love Noel too and really like his quirky voice. Thought his "I. Will. Kill. You!" to Bulldog during Roz's KACL leaving Do was hilarious. As is his arms-out-sideways "C'mon then" when he's up for a scrap - very funny.
[Scene: Frasier, Niles & Martin viewing Daphne and child from veranda.....]
Niles: "Look at them, aren't they beautiful?"
Martin: "Yeah, and they'll stay like that too - as long as she's breastfeeding."
