Episode Synopsis

It's the day after Roz's pregnancy was publicly announced by Frasier (see Episode 5.03 - Halloween), and just before his KACL show, Frasier wants to make sure she's OK. She says she's fine, and she has informed the baby's father too but he's an architect currently working in Cairo. However, later that day at Frasier's apartment, when Frasier picks up on the fact that Roz tells the rest of the Crane household that the father's an archaeologist, he manages to get the truth out of Roz - the father is neither of the things she said and hasn't been told about the baby either, but promises Frasier she will tell him the next day. Bumping into Roz at Cafe Nervosa the next day, Frasier realises that the just-turned-twenty year old waiter Rick is the father, leaving Frasier somewhat taken aback.

When Roz finally tells Rick he's a father, she assures him she doesn't want any money or anything, but Rick finds it all a bit much and leaves the cafe in a bit of a state. That evening, as Roz is waiting for Frasier to take her out to dinner, Rick unexpectedly drops by and announces that he's decided to drop out of college, before proposing to Roz! She lets him down easily, telling him it wouldn't be practical and she intends to raise the child herself, before giving him a sonogram of their baby. Frasier arrives after Rick's left and the pair discuss whether Roz is really ready for motherhood.

Episode Highlights

- Roz tells Frasier she was up all night thinking about whether to have the baby:
Frasier: I suppose a decision of that magnitude would take many sleepless....
Roz: I'm having the baby.
Frasier: .... hours to make!

- Roz trying to make Bulldog think he's the father

- Martin's sitting in his chair when someone rings the bell at Frasier's apartment:
Daphne: I'm a little indisposed here.
Martin: Oh sorry Daph. [Shouts] Hang on she's coming!

- Martin recalls that in his day single mothers would be sent away to have their babies:
Martin: Then when she came back, they'd raise the baby as a little sister. Not like today - we had morals and values back then!

- Niles tells Daphne that Maris' biological clock is slowly winding down:
Frasier: Luckily she flies to Zurich twice a year to have it reset (!)

- Frasier offers Roz 8 different kinds of water from his fridge:
Martin: He's got room for 8 different kinds of water in that fridge, but I have to keep my can of spray cheese under the sink!

- Frasier works out that the 20 year old waiter Rick is the father of Roz's baby:
Roz: It's a little embarassing with him being seven years younger than I am - oh, put your eyebrows down!

- Roz worries about being a single mother, saying that Frasier had Lilith to help him:
Roz: Lilith can know about the booties and snugglies.
Frasier: You never met Lilith did you (?)

Frasier Online Episode Review

After the high farce of the previous episode, Halloween, comes this well written and performed companion episode that mixes laughs and emotions superbly as Roz takes centre stage, dealing with the fallout from her pregnancy. Peri Gilpin gets a chance to really shine in this episode, and shine she does - her scenes with Rick were great, as was the following one with Frasier. There's also a brilliant running joke about it being Daphne's job to answer the door of Frasier's apartment, and a wonderful scene in the cafe about Niles having gone through and corrected the grammar of all the grafiti in Cafe Nervosa's mens room. The episode, however, really belongs to Peri Gilpin and hopefully this storyline will bring about some much needed character development to Roz.

Resuming the day after "Halloween"'s events, this is pretty much a "cope" episode, concerning Roz's realization that motherhood is impending. More of a character piece, the laughs are put on hold somewhat as Frasier attempts to deduce the father, and Roz's informing of said father. The producers could've gone with a better attempt at continuity, as this 'Rick' had never been barista-ing before, not even as a background performer. Would it have hurt to throw him a couple lines in, say, "The Gift Horse," during the cafe scene? Or "The Lady Vanishes," which had a brief Nervosa moment as well? Eh, I quibble. Points are scored back by including a very neccessary, lengthy passage of Roz and the father coming to grips with everything. So often shows omit the reality of wayward parenting and leave things unsettled. The writers are laudable here. Two of the best comic bits are, as usual, afterthoughts to the plot; one with Roz and Bulldog, and the other being Niles and the 'corkscrew' moment. Something about Pierce's feigned incense with that grin, is hilarity.
