Episode Synopsis

Niles and Martin enter Frasier's apartment with Niles lamenting the fact that he has made Maris angry for respecting her wishes not to celebrate her 40th birthday in any way. He comes to the decision that a big costume ball is the answer. Frasier, meanwhile, is searching the apartment for a book he has to return to the station manager about the history of the English theatre. Martin mentions that Daphne was looking for something to send her to sleep, and should ask her when she comes in. Feeling impatient, Frasier gingerly enters Daphne's room and spies his book on her bedside table. After picking it up, he can't help but start looking at the rest of Daphne's belongings having never been in there before. Just as he picks up a bottle of pills, Daphne comes in and demands to know what he is doing. Frasier hurridly apologises and rushes out. The whole incident turns Daphne very hostile against Frasier but he eventually apologises and she forgives him.

However, when Frasier rediscovers the bottle of pills he accidentally took, he realises she will miss them so seizing the moment when Daphne is about to give Martin his physical therapy, he once again enters Daphne's toom to return them. Just as he does, Daphne re-enters after Martin refuses to do them leaving Frasier to rush into the closet to hide. Daphne then starts to undress for a shower and as Daphne moves around her room, Frasier keeps trying to get out but ends up behind her bathroom door as Daphne gets in the shower. Daphne then says "What are you doing?! Get out! That's disgusting !" and Frasier rushes out from behind the door to see Eddie drinking from the toilet, before running out. Daphne considers quitting so Frasier will have to come up with something pretty good to keep her from leaving.

Episode Highlights

- Niles wonders how to make it up with Maris:
Martin: When your mother got mad at me, I'd just grab her, bend her backwards and give her a kiss that made her glad she was a woman.
Niles: I can't do that with Maris. She has abnormally rigid vertebrae - she'd snap like a twig.

- Frasier offers some advice to Niles over Maris:
Frasier: I know she's a bit touchy about her age - even though it's not the first time she's turned 40 (!)

- Niles' reaction to Frasier turning on the coffee grinder with his hand down the waste disposal.

- The whole scene where Frasier is trapped in Daphne's room and has to keep hiding to avoid her.

- Frasier asks Niles how he managed to get Maris to forgive him:
Niles: I sat her down, looked deeply into her eyes and said "Here are the keys to your new Mercedes."

- Frasier doesn't approve of this gesture:
Frasier: I happen to think that bribery is the wrong way for couples to resolve their conflicts.
Niles: And during which of your failed marriages did you hone that theory (!?)

- The final scene where Daphne returns to find all the Crane men and Eddie in her room seemingly going through all her belongings.

Frasier Online Episode Review

An classic episode, really, that shows how well 'Frasier' can do physical comedy with all the scenes in Daphne's room excellently directed with wonderful timing. It was certainly very interesting to finally see inside of Daphne's room, and the episode certainly shows how difficult it must be to live in somebody else's house. The rest of the episode was well written with some wonderful exchanges between the cast. All of this together with the fact that Niles finally has sex with Maris and a superb closing scene in Daphne's room adds up to a top notch episode.

NB: The reason why this episode is sometime referred to as 'A Room With A View' is because this is what some of the UK TV listings called this episode when it was originally broadcast.

A great credit to the cast, Nov 29, 2011

Reviewer: Sammy J from Melbourne, Australia

At some point in their lives, most sitcoms do an episode that
features only the regular cast. On most sitcoms, however, this is
generally a special event, or an excuse to showcase some other
production technique - shooting in real time or in the one location.
"Daphne's Room" is, by chance, an episode with speaking parts
only for the five regulars, but you wouldn't know it unless you
looked at the cast list. All five of the ensemble (and Eddie) make
this an enchanting and hilarious half-hour, born out of the
characters and their relationships, and some sublime physical
comedy.

It's strange that the weirdness of Daphne's situation - living and
working for two men who also happen to be two of her close
friends and confidantes - is rarely used as a plot on the series. So
it's a great relief that this episode is very, very funny and truthful.
All the scenes in Daphne's room are exquisitely directed. My
personal favourite is still that first examination, with photographs
of Prince Charles and that utterly bizarre little alien knick-knack.
Niles jumping back and forth with glee into Daphne's doorway is
also hilarious.

It's a nice showcase for Jane Leeves too, as she finally
contemplates her living situation, and feels like a step toward the
ultimate bonding of the extended Crane clan.
