Episode Synopsis

Frasier is in two minds about whether to start doing on-air endorsements of products that as Frasier turns down, Bulldog laps up. After speaking with Martin and Daphne, he agrees to try out the product first before endorsing it. Bulldog's agent, Bebe Glazer, then introduces herself and starts finding him new products. He balks, though, at an advert for a can of nuts but his mind is changed when he finds out it is for television. Just before it is about to be filmed, Frasier is still in a moral quandry and meets with Niles to talk about it. What will Frasier finally decide to do?

Episode Highlights

- A caller wants Frasier to help him decide whether he should call his boat 'Lulubelle' or 'The Intrepid':
Frasier: Roger, at Cornell University they have an incredible piece of scientific equipment known as the tunneling electron microscope. Now, this microscope is so powerful that by firing electrons you can actually see images of the atom, the infinitesimally minute building blocks of our universe. Roger, if I were using that microscope right now... I still wouldn't be able to locate my interest in your problem. Thank you for your call.

- After Bulldog does a Chinese restaurant advert:
Roz: We're gonna get sued this time for sure!

Frasier: How would you feel if I publicly endorsed a product?
Daphne: Oh, you mean like Cher does?
Frasier: Thank you Daphne - one against.

- Referring to 'Basic Instinct':
Niles: Have you seen that film? Maris and I rented it. I don't mind telling you we pushed our beds together that night. And that was no mean feat - as you know my bed is across the hall from hers.

Frasier Online Episode Review

The introduction to the show of Bebe Glazer, and while it's not as good as some as some of the later Bebe episodes, they are some funny moments here - I liked the way she managed to convince Frasuer to do the advert for canned nuts despite Frasier's better instincts. Thankfully, Harriet Sansom Harris got a very favourable reaction to her perfomance in this episode and kick started her relationship with the show, so for that we should be grateful, but a sharper script would have helped make this a better episode

An early little gem, Jul 09, 2009

Reviewer: Sammy J from Canberra, Australia

"Selling Out" has only one con: it's a bit predictable. But if you can
forgive this, it proves to be quite the gem of an episode. With the
introduction of Bebe Glazer, Frasier's cut-throat agent played by the
marvellous Harriet Sansom Harris, is handled well (although her
character's episodes will indeed get sharper). Meanwhile, there are
plenty of great moments - Niles' musing about watching "Basic
Instinct" with Maris is hilarious, as is Daphne's reminiscences of her
time as a child actress - and everyone is in fine form. Bulldog remains
very one-dimensional at this point, but he fits in a lot better with the exaggerated Bebe in the frame. Great fun.
