Episode Synopsis

Dr Frasier Crane, having left Boston and 'Cheers' behind him, has moved back to his home town of Seattle, got himself a new job as a radio psychiatrist on talk radio station KACL, a stylish new apartment and is settling into his new life. After meeting with his brother Niles, though, he discovers that his father Martin has had an accident and they both decide that he should go and live with Frasier, which he does along with Martin's best friend - his dog Eddie. After a manic few days, Frasier is ready to throw him out but Niles suggests hiring a homecare worker. Martin finally settles for a rather daffy psychic cum homecare worker from Manchester called Daphne Moon, and despite Frasier saying no one else was going to move in, she does and so Frasier now has to adjust to sharing his new life with his father, his dog, and his father's homecare worker. The scene has been set...

Episode Highlights

- Niles and Frasier's first scene together with a wonderful psychiatry vs. radio show exchange.

- Frasier says he likes Maris the way he likes the sun:
Frasier: Maris is like the sun, except without the warmth.

- Niles and Martin arrive at Frasier's:
Niles:
Why don't I take Dad's things into his new bachelor quarters so you two scoundrels can plan some hi-jinks.
Martin:
I think that wife of his is driving him nutso.
Frasier
: Yes - we Crane boys sure know how to marry (!)

- After describing his non matching apartment as eclectic, Frasier doesn't think Martin's chair goes with anything:
Martin: I know, it's eclectic.

- Daphne arrives and meets the family:
Daphne
: And who might this be?
Frasier: That is Eddie.
Martin: I call him Eddie spaghetti.
Daphne: Oh, he likes pasta?
Martin: No, he has worms.

- Daphne spies Martin's chair:
Daphne
: Oh will you look at that - what a comfy chair. It's like I always say - start with the good stuff and replace the rest when you can afford it.

- Frasier says he'll inform Daphne if she's got the job:
Frasier
: We'll contact you - if not by phone, then through the toaster.

Frasier Online Episode Review

A fabulous pilot episode for a new comedy that introduces not only most of the principal characters in a very funny manner, but also sets up a lot of the themes that will run through the show such as Martin's dismissive attitude of Frasier's (and Niles') high class attitude to life. A brilliant start to the series, and an undoubted classic episode of the show.

Perfect Pilot, Oct 15, 2011

It amazing how smooth this pilot is. Most pilots are rough, awkward,
and unsatisfying, especially when watching them later after you know
the characters. This episode is a guide for how pilots should be done,
the writers and actors really had an early handle on what the show
would be, what everyone's role would be, and how the characters would
interact. Unlike other pilots, it fits right in with later seasons, and it also
didn't try to do too much. This show hit the ground running thanks to
the brilliant, focused work on this episode.
